Do braces hurt more than Invisalign®

If you’re wondering whether braces hurt more than Invisalign®, you’re definitely not alone - it’s one of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer is that both can cause a little discomfort at times, this is because the braces are gently moving your teeth to create your dream smile. However, the experience does feel a bit different with each option.

Braces discomfort: what to expect

With traditional braces, you might feel some tenderness right after they're fitted or adjusted. That's your teeth responding to the pressure and movement, which is completely normal.

It can make eating feel a bit tricky for a day or two. Your lips and cheeks may also need a little time to get used to the brackets, which can rub at first. Don't worry - your mouth adapts quickly! You can use the wax (provided in your kit), it can be a real lifesaver in those early days!

Invisalign® discomfort: how it differs

With Invisalign®, most people say the discomfort is milder. Each time you pop in a new set of aligners, you may notice some pressure for a day or so, especially when eating.

The big advantage is that there are no wires or brackets, so there's far less chance of irritation inside the mouth.

The good news: any soreness is temporary

However you straighten your teeth, the key thing to remember is that any soreness is temporary. Sticking to soft foods, taking pain relief if you need it, and following the advice from our Patient Co-ordinator will help keep everything comfortable.
