Travelling With Braces and Clear Aligners: Summer Care Tips

Holidays should feel easy. If you are wearing braces or clear aligners, a little preparation will keep treatment on track while you soak up the sun. With the right kit, smart routines, and a clear plan for what to do if something goes wrong, you can travel with confidence.

Travelling With Braces and Clear Aligners: Summer Care Tips

At Helix House Orthodontics in West Bridgford, our Specialist Orthodontists use digital tools, including Dental Monitoring, to support you wherever you are. Whether you are flying long haul or taking a weekend break, these summer tips will help you enjoy the journey and protect your smile.

Your summer travel kit checklist

Pack a small, grab-and-go pouch so you can find essentials quickly in airports, at the beach, or on a day trip.

We recommend:

  • A rigid travel case for aligners or retainers, plus a second spare case.
  • Chewies to seat aligners fully after meals or flights.
  • An aligner removal tool for hygienic, stress-free removal.
  • Interdental brushes, a travel toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and floss or floss threaders.
  • Orthodontic wax to cushion brackets or a rubbing wire.
  • Spare elastics if prescribed, and a small mirror.
  • A labelled retainer storage bag or case.
  • A written plan with our phone number and email, your appointment details, and instructions for lost or damaged appliances.

If your clinician has advised carrying a spare set of aligners, pack them in your hand luggage. Do not advance to a new aligner without guidance unless we have advised this in writing.

Braces and clear aligners on the move

We focus on both braces and clear aligners, including Invisalign® for suitable cases. The core travel principles are the same, with a few device-specific tips.

For clear aligners

  • Wear them 20 to 22 hours per day. Set phone reminders after meals so holiday routines do not slip.
  • Always remove aligners to eat or drink anything except cool water. Hot drinks can warp the plastic.
  • After meals, rinse, brush if you can, then reinsert with chewies to ensure a snug fit.

For fixed braces

  • Keep to a braces-safe diet. Avoid hard, sticky, or very chewy foods that can break brackets or bend wires. Cut fruit and crusty bread into small pieces.
  • Use interdental brushes after meals to clear plaque and sand or seed debris.
  • Orthodontic wax is your friend. If a bracket rubs or a wire end irritates, dry the area and apply a small ball of wax.

Flying, heat, and holiday activities

Flying

  • Cabin pressure will not damage braces or aligners, but dehydration can make aligners feel tight. Sip water regularly.
  • Keep aligners, elastics, and your case in your carry-on bag, not in checked luggage.

Temperature exposure

  • Do not leave aligners, retainers, or elastics in a hot car, on a sunlounger, or near a barbecue. Heat can distort aligners and weaken elastic bands.
  • Rinse aligners with cool water only. Avoid hot water when cleaning.

Swimming

  • You can swim with aligners in place. If you prefer to remove them, store them in a rigid case and reinsert as soon as you finish.
  • For braces, rinse with clean water after swimming, especially after chlorinated pools.

Sports and mouthguards

  • For contact or ball sports, use a well-fitted mouthguard.
  • If you wear aligners, remove them for play and store them safely.
  • Reinsert aligners promptly afterwards.
  • With fixed braces, a braces-ready mouthguard helps prevent soft tissue injury.

Mealtime routines

For aligners

Remove, store in the case, brush or rinse, and reseat with chewies. Keep a small travel kit in your day bag so you are not tempted to wrap aligners in a napkin, which is a common way they get lost.

For braces

Stick to softer choices and avoid biting into hard items with front teeth. Sugar and fizzy drinks can increase the risk of marks around brackets, so keep those to a minimum and brush promptly.

Dental Monitoring while you are away

Dental Monitoring lets us review your progress wherever you are.

Before you travel, check:

  • You can log in to the app and your weekly scan schedule is clear.
  • Your cheek retractors and scan box are packed.
  • If the app flags an issue, follow the prompts. Our clinicians review scans, so you can often avoid an unplanned visit. If we need to speak with you, we will let you know how to proceed.
  • Notifications are switched on so you receive guidance in real time.

What to do if something goes wrong

Lost or damaged aligners

If you have been instructed to move to the next tray in this situation, follow that plan and message us via Dental Monitoring. Otherwise, wear the previous tray to hold progress and contact us for advice.

Never leave teeth without any aligner unless directed. Even a few days can allow unwanted movement.

Broken bracket or long wire

Use orthodontic wax to cover sharp edges. If a wire is long, a small piece of clean, blunt nail file can smooth a tiny spicule until we advise next steps. Do not cut wires yourself.

Keep elastics going as prescribed unless a breakage affects where you hook them. If unsure, pause and contact us.

Pain or ulcers

Warm saltwater rinses and wax usually help. Over-the-counter pain relief can be used as directed on the label if required.

Emergency support

Message us in Dental Monitoring with photos or a scan. For urgent issues during opening hours, call our West Bridgford practice team on 0115 9811 911.

If you are abroad and in pain, a local dentist may be able to smooth a wire or provide temporary relief until you return to us.

Virtual appointments

We can often arrange a short video review. Let us know your time zone and availability, and have your travel kit to hand for any simple fixes we guide you through.

Costs, NHS availability, and booking

Treatment costs vary by case complexity and appliance choice. After a specialist assessment and digital scans, we provide a written quote with finance options, including 0% interest plans subject to eligibility.

For current guidance on fees and monthly payments, see our pricing and finance information at a time that suits you.

If you are comparing options in Nottingham, you can explore our information on braces for adults and our overview of clear aligners for adults, including Invisalign®, Spark, and Angel Aligners. These pages outline typical inclusions, such as retainers and one year of aftercare, and how Dental Monitoring supports progress with fewer in-person visits.
